The Sorrows of Young Werther

The novel that made Goethe famous overnight across Europe — born of his months in Wetzlar.

Written in four weeks of 1774, the epistolary novel triggered Europe’s first literary fever — “Werther costume” and all. Napoleon claimed to have read it seven times and carried it to Egypt.

Iphigenia in Tauris

Recast into verse on the road to Italy; Tischbein painted its scene into his famous portrait.

Begun in prose in Weimar, finished in classical verse between Verona and Rome in 1786–87. Its plea for pure humanity became a motto of Weimar Classicism.

The founding novel of self-formation — a journey of education through theatre and society.

The prototype of the Bildungsroman, admired by Schiller and the Romantics alike. Its songs — Mignon’s “Kennst du das Land” above all — carried Goethe’s verse across Europe.
